About The Position

CBC Ottawa is looking for a dynamic and creative digital journalist to join their newsroom and contribute to their weekend audience. The ideal candidate is passionate about breaking news and enterprise storytelling, with a keen interest in uncovering issues that matter to the audience. This role requires an exceptional journalist and self-starter who can analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure, multi-platform newsroom. The journalist will be responsible for writing, editing, and packaging digital news and current affairs content, chasing their own stories, and writing based on material gathered by colleagues. Innovation in new workflows and story treatments is encouraged. Understanding the diverse population of Ottawa and reflecting all communities in content is important, as is appreciating and giving voice to a range of perspectives. The role ensures adherence to CBC journalistic standards, delivering fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, and resonant stories for the communities served.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.
  • Strong understanding of online news, including social media and methods of online content distribution.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Ottawa and surrounding areas and an openness to diverse perspectives and ideas.
  • Ability to forge positive team relationships and keen to work on a team that values collaboration and transparency.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Attention to detail and strong time management skills.
  • Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; a standout colleague.
  • A passion for learning new tools and journalism forms -- and an interest in shaping them for the future.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company, other classes considered an asset.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
  • Excited to generate digital content and be part of the weekend team at CBC Ottawa.
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
  • As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next step will be asked to complete a background check.
  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, source, research, fact-check and write short and long-form enterprise articles with an understanding of alternative digital storytelling formats that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Repurpose content from other CBC platforms, including writing, packaging stories with strong headlines, photos, video, audio and graphics using the latest information and audience metrics.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold both from the digital desk and in the field.
  • Contribute to live updates on the webpage during breaking news.
  • Post and embed video stories on cbc.ca.
  • Copy edit and publish digital content from other writers.
  • Schedule and write copy for social media platforms as well as moderate livestreams.
