About The Position

The Business Manager provides strategic and comprehensive support of the program mission and operations across three main areas: Budget & Payroll, Personnel & Human Resources, and Operations & Facilities. The Business Manager reports to the Director of University Honors. This role is responsible for the end-to-end administration and continuous improvement of payroll, as well as the appointment, onboarding, and offboarding processes for faculty, staff, and student workers. The Business Manager supports staff, faculty, and student leaders from hire to offboarding by interpreting and applying relevant University policies, developing procedures and resources, and serving as the primary liaison to central HR and Benefits. To ensure the effective and efficient flow of office processes, the Business Manager oversees the use, scheduling, and stock of all spaces in the UH Commons (first floor of Yahentamitsi Hall). As the primary supervisor of the health and functionality of our physical space, the Business Manager works with relevant campus partners to optimize the furniture, hardware, and software utilized in the unit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of professional human resources, payroll, finance, accounting, procurement, or travel coordination experience.
  • Knowledge of human resources policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable human resources related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree(s) from an accredited institution
  • Five or more years of full-time administrative experience in an academic setting
  • Experience in supervising students and/or staff
  • Knowledge of payroll policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable payroll related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of systems in use at USM institutions: Workday, Concur, and Adaptive Planning.
  • Skill in the use of Google Suite products.
  • Skill in the use of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to develop and administer new policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to inclusive practices in one’s work.
  • Experience in training and supporting students and/or staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a bi-weekly payroll for all employees, ensuring compliance with UMD policies and procedures and relevant federal and state laws.
  • Improve operational efficiency and maintain integrity in all business operations.
  • Act as the primary architect of budget platforms, from modeling to tracking.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with budget officers in the Honors College and UGST.
  • Interpret and apply relevant University policies for staff, faculty, and student leaders from hire to offboarding.
  • Develop procedures and resources for HR processes.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to central HR and Benefits.
  • Oversee the use, scheduling, and stock of all spaces in the UH Commons.
  • Work with relevant campus partners to optimize furniture, hardware, and software utilized in the unit.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
