About The Position

As a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer on Ellis Porter’s Data Services team, you will build and maintain the reports and dashboards that Porters rely on to make informed decisions. You will partner directly with teams across the firm to understand their reporting needs and translate them into clear, reliable dashboards. You will also own the Power BI data models and refresh cadences behind the dashboards, ensuring reports are accurate, efficient, and positioned to evolve as our firm grows. This role is designed as a train-up opportunity. We are hiring for aptitude, curiosity, discretion, and a strong understanding of how EP works. Power BI, Power Query, and Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) can be learned on the job through structured support from the Manager of Data Services and Products; deep familiarity with our teams, workflows, and business needs cannot. If you understand our organization and enjoy working with data, we encourage you to apply, even if you have never held a technical title. This role also offers flexibility to adapt to the areas where the BI Developer can have the greatest impact in supporting the team. This position can be fully remote from any U.S. location, or based in either our Troy, MI or Ann Arbor, MI office as an in-person or hybrid role. Please note - although this role can be remote, all work must be performed within the United States.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Working knowledge of how EP operates, including our practice areas, case lifecycle, or the systems our teams use day-to-day
  • A track record of learning new tools or systems on the job and putting them into practice
  • Sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive firm information
  • Intellectual curiosity and a habit of asking why the numbers are what they are
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders and translate business requests into specific build requirements
  • Willingness to learn Power BI, Power Query, and DAX on the job with structured coaching and a defined ramp plan
  • Strong attention to detail

Nice To Haves

  • Prior exposure to Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or another business intelligence tool preferred, but not required
  • Familiarity with Structured Query Language (SQL), at a read-only level or greater preferred
  • Experience producing scheduled or recurring reports (reports that are refreshed and distributed on a defined cadence) in Excel, Google Sheets, Salesforce, or HubSpot preferred
  • Familiarity with SharePoint lists, Salesforce, HubSpot, or MyCase as data sources preferred

Responsibilities

  • Meet with Porters across the firm to understand their reporting needs and translate them into clear requirements
  • Build and maintain Power BI dashboards to help answer those needs
  • Build and maintain the data models behind those dashboards (the reusable layer of tables and calculations a dashboard reads from) to ensure reports remain accurate and adaptable
  • Write data transformations in Power Query to prepare source data, and write DAX calculations to produce the measures shown on the reports
  • Manage refresh cadences and source connections ensuring reports remain current
  • Manage dashboard access to ensure Porters only see the reports appropriate to their role
  • Handle ad-hoc reporting requests with consistent turnaround
  • Maintain the existing catalog of EP reports, retire reports no longer in use, and document reports that remain in service
  • Handle sensitive firm data with appropriate discretion at all times
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management
