Bus Aide
About The Position
The Bus Aide assists the Driver to ensure the safety of students who are being transported. This role involves working with students with physical disabilities, monitoring their safety during transport, and assisting them with physical needs. The Bus Aide must be able to safely lift and manage children and ensure they are left with appropriate staff or caregivers. They will also handle safety equipment and interact with students in a friendly manner, even when dealing with challenging behavior or occasional exposure to bodily fluids. The Bus Aide supports the Bus Driver and other transportation staff with various duties and must comply with all Board of Education policies.
Requirements
- Physical capability of safely and appropriately lifting and managing preschool and special needs children when necessary
- Ability to properly handle wheelchair tie-down straps and other safety equipment
- Ability to deal with students in a friendly manner, even the occasional unruly student
- Ability to deal with occasional exposure to blood and bodily fluids
- Compliance with all Plain Local Board of Education policies and procedures
Responsibilities
- Work with Bus Driver(s), Transportation Supervisor, and Transportation Clerk to aid a student in line with a student’s I.E.P.
- Assist students with physical disabilities on and off the bus using the wheelchair lift or other adaptations as instructed - Battery or hydraulic powered
- Monitor students with disabilities while they ride the bus to ensure their safety and assist them with any physical needs
- Have physical capability of safely and appropriately lifting and managing preschool and special needs children when necessary
- Make sure that students with disabilities are safely left with a school staff member or their parent/caregiver before departing
- Properly handle wheelchair tie-down straps and other safety equipment as needed
- Deal with students in a friendly manner, even the occasional unruly student
- Deal with occasional exposure to blood and bodily fluids
- Assist the Bus Driver with other duties as requested by the Bus Driver, Transportation Supervisor, or Transportation Clerk
- Comply with all Plain Local Board of Education policies and procedures
- Perform other duties as directed
