About The Position

Bus monitors should be able to give full attention to what children, parents or other staff are saying. They should be able to teach children how to do things, like put their seat belts on or sit back and follow procedures. Speaking skills come into play when communicating with children, the bus driver, parents, or other staff. Bus monitors must be able to convey information effectively. Bus monitors should also be able to communicate information that others understand which will be easier with oral expression skills.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to give full attention to what children, parents or other staff are saying.
  • Ability to teach children how to do things, like put their seat belts on or sit back and follow procedures.
  • Speaking skills for communicating with children, the bus driver, parents, or other staff.
  • Ability to convey information effectively.
  • Oral expression skills.
  • Ability to operate a lift and secure wheelchairs in tie-down system.
  • Ability to assist drivers in maintaining safety on the bus in route and while the bus is parked as bus stops.
  • Ability to maintain order on the bus.
  • Ability to prepare for and assist with emergency evacuations.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and quickly.
  • Ability to complete accurate records as required by policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to follow basic principles of early childhood development.
  • Ability to establish good relationships with the children, the bus driver, the parents, and other staff.
  • Ability to ensure no children are left after the bus route is completed.
  • Ability to ensure tidiness of the bus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting children with getting on and off the bus safely.
  • Make sure children are in their assigned seats, if applicable, and they must make sure that children get off the bus at the correct stops.
  • Ensure children remain safely seated while the bus is in motion.
  • Operate a lift and secure wheelchairs in tie-down system.
  • Assist drivers in maintaining safety on the bus in route and while the bus is parked as bus stops.
  • Maintaining order on the bus.
  • Prepare for and assist with emergency evacuations. Handle emergency situations calmly and quickly.
  • Complete accurate records as required by policies and procedures.
  • Understanding and following written and oral instructions.
  • Following basic principles of early childhood development and establishing good relationships with the children, the bus driver, the parents, and other staff.
  • Make sure there are not any children left after the bus route is completed and ensure tidiness of the bus.
