About The Position

Ride buses and help the driver ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students. This role involves student management, ensuring safety on the bus, and assisting with routes and schedules. The Bus Aide must be able to follow verbal instructions, communicate effectively, and operate safety equipment. They will also be responsible for managing student behavior and communicating with teachers and parents.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate.
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment.
  • Ability to work well with children with special needs.
  • Working knowledge of wheelchair lifts, ramps, locks, and special needs adaptive equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to read a limited number of two and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to write and speak simple sentences.
  • Ability to perform basic math operations.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Frequent walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling is required.
  • Moderate lifting and carrying is required.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Regular attendance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
  • Familiarity with procedures established by transportation and special education departments.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students as they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Take children into the building and help them find their classrooms.
  • Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manage student behavior and report discipline problems to the appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents daily regarding student behavior.
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from the school campus.
  • Supervise the use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats by students.
  • Follow emergency procedures and help the driver administer first aid if necessary.
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established procedures and techniques for lifting, assisting students, and securing students in wheelchairs.
  • Keep the bus clean.
  • Participate in staff meetings and special events as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
