About The Position

To provide effective Career and Technical instruction in the assigned trade area; to assist assigned students to complete the required competencies for that trade area; demonstrate effective classroom or lab management; ensure that the lab is operated in compliance with all aspects of safety management; and to maintain accurate and current students records for the assigned student.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom/Lab environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education.
  • Working knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs.
  • Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories.
  • Demonstrate competency in the related field of current trade licensure.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least two years' full time or 2000 hours of verifiable experience in the last five years in the relevant field/trade area for a teaching certificate.
  • Eligible for a Journeyman or Master Electrician/Plumbing/Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) License/Certification or any other Industrial/Technical Professional License in the relevant trade area/field issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).
  • Eligible for a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
  • Must submit all documentation for your provisional license to the licensure designee for Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) during the first 90 days of employment (if you do not currently hold a teachers/trade license from the Department of Education (DOE)).
  • Obtaining a provisional license within the 1-year probationary period is employee’s responsibility and is required to continuing employment at the Department of Corrections (DOC) (if you do not currently hold a teachers/trade license from the Department of Education (DOE)).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in correctional education classroom management.
  • Five years experience in the related trade/field.
  • Must have a Journeyman or Master Electrician/Plumbing/ Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) License/Certification or any other Industrial/Technical Professional License in the relevant trade area/field issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).
  • Must have a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
  • Knowledge of all phases of the trade area.
  • Ability to supervise adult inmates in a classroom/lab environment in a correctional facility.
  • Knowledge and experience in correctional education classroom management.
  • Ability to facilitate other instructors.
  • Knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures and policies governing correctional education.
