About The Position

To provide quality instruction that meets the needs of the student in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED) and that enables incarcerated youth and adults to become responsible, productive, tax-paying members of their community. Additionally, position is required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. Position provides individual and group instruction to adult student inmates. Successful candidate will maintain classroom, equipment, and inventories; ensure compliance with all Department of Corrections (DOC) regulations; maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise students and aides in a classroom setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education.
  • Working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs.
  • Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students in a classroom/lab environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in or in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science or other relevant subject.
  • Experience teaching adults and or youth.
  • Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education.
  • Experience to work with students in a classroom/lab environment.
  • Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies.

  • Master’s degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field.
  • Knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult correctional education.
  • Experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting.
  • Experience and knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections' institutional policies and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in correctional education classroom management.
  • Knowledge, experience and ability to supervise students and inmate aides in a correctional facility.
  • Advanced knowledge and success rate in General Educational Development (GED) Preparation and completion.
