About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking a qualified Building Technician for the Whycocomagh Education Centre. This is a 12-month position with 8-hour workdays. The SRCE is part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, focused on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The Centre operates 20 schools and pre-primary programs across four counties in northeastern Nova Scotia.

Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized community college trades training program, and/or enrollment in a building trade apprenticeship program, or fourth class power engineer certificate
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in Building Maintenance or Construction
  • Commercial cleaning experience and training
  • Previously demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Good technology and organizational skills to ensure accurate records of preventative maintenance work orders, purchase orders, employee time sheets, inventory, snow removal logs, security logs, etc.
  • Ability to ensure that all aspects of building maintenance and usage of the school are satisfied and emergencies are dealt with as they arise
  • Excellent knowledge of OHS procedures and regulations
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification or willing to obtain
  • Current WHMIS certification or willing to obtain

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience working in a building maintenance environment
  • Preference given for those having experience in supervising facilities staff and/or building trades in a working environment

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, service and repair building technical equipment and systems
  • Maintain and repair technical equipment and systems, such as alarms, sprinklers, etc.
  • Inspect and test operation of equipment and systems in accordance with regulations
  • Complete work orders, test and maintenance reports
  • Calibrate components and instruments according to manufacturers' specifications
  • Repair and adjust system components, such as sensors, etc.
  • Consult manufacturers' manuals to determine tests and maintenance procedures
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance work and complete test and maintenance reports
  • Other related duties including additional maintenance, groundskeeping or custodial as required
