About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking qualified candidates for a School Secretary position at H M Macdonald Elementary. The SRCE is part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, established to support student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students and serves a large geographical area in northeastern Nova Scotia. This position falls under the CUPE Local 955 job classification.

Requirements

  • High School Completion Certificate or Grade 12 equivalency.
  • Completion of a recognized secretarial, office administration or similar recognized program.
  • Recent, relevant technology training, or the equivalent in recent, relevant experience.
  • A minimum of two years recent relevant secretarial/administrative experience.
  • Proficiency in word processing, database, spreadsheet, accounting, and email applications.
  • Excellent oral, written, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff and the public.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate a high level of technology skills and may be required to do practical testing in any of the following: Power School, School Based Accounting Software, Phone systems, SRCE Policies and Procedures, Students Records Information Systems.
  • Application must include at least three (3) work-related references; one must be your most recent supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a recognized bookkeeping/accounting program or current training and experience.
  • Preference will be given to those who have training/experience in using student information system software.

Responsibilities

  • Perform secretarial duties which may include answering the telephone, greeting visitors and general public, handling staff, student and public inquiries while presenting a positive image of the school.
  • Sort and distribute incoming mail; handle money from global school funds and student funds to keep accurate accounts and banking reconciliations, in accordance with generally accepted accounting procedures.
  • Input and access information from the student information system under the direction of school administration.
  • Prepare school correspondence, reports, documents and statistical information as required by the principal, SRCE and the Department of Education.
  • Compile bulk orders for school needs and assist in the preparation of ordering, including school book bureau orders.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
