The Building Operator is responsible for efficient operation and maintenance of the assigned facility’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Maintenance and operational work is performed to maximize the life and reliability of these systems. The role may operate without an on-site Chief Engineer and may be the facility’s sole engineering position. Depending on the assignment’s size and complexity, the operator may supervise maintenance staff. The operator applies knowledge and experience to day-to-day physical plant operations, learns the facility’s main and auxiliary systems and procedures, and may take charge of a shift and make operating decisions without supervision. The role requires following equipment operating procedures and the two-person safety verification process, monitoring building and manufacturing systems, documenting rounds, reporting abnormal conditions, and carrying out advanced preventive maintenance and equipment analysis. Operators also use tools and instruments to perform repairs and maintenance and take on other team-oriented maintenance duties as assigned. This position supports a 24/7 operation and requires flexibility to cover 12-hour shifts, adjusted shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. The position pays $38.25–$45.00; actual compensation may depend on factors including work location, experience, qualifications, and collective bargaining coverage. Eligible employees may enroll in benefit programs that generally include health, vision, and dental insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance, and paid and unpaid time away from work.
