About The Position

We currently have an opportunity for a Building Mechanical Engineer to join our team. This role will work directly with engineers and other design staff to provide building mechanical and plumbing designs for facilities primarily serving the water and wastewater industries. Duties include assisting in the development of P&IDs, layout and design of equipment, design of building mechanical and plumbing systems, development of 3D models, production of contract documents, field investigations, and support during construction. Additional responsibilities will include assisting the National Discipline Lead with updating company design standards and details. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative multi-discipline environment to develop designs for new facilities, expansions, upgrades and retrofits. Projects include both conventional design/bid/build and alternative delivery such as design/build. Job Summary The TC2, Building Mechanical Engineering role is responsible for developing HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler calculations for commercial buildings and wastewater treatment facilities. The role interprets NFPA standards and ensures that all designs meet regulatory requirements. The role includes sizing ductwork, plumbing, and fire sprinkler distribution systems, as well as selecting suitable equipment. The role drafts and models these systems using AutoCAD and Revit software and develops specifications in Word and Speclink.

Requirements

  • Adept at interpreting and applying mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire codes as well as NFPA standards.
  • Proficient in using software for drafting and modeling HVAC, plumbing and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Skilled in developing HVAC, plumbing and fire sprinkler calculations and specifications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills for handling routine tasks.
  • Ability to review and coordinate HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler drawings/specifications with other engineering disciplines.
  • Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of building mechanical engineering or related experience.
  • Typically certified in the SMS Framework, and progressing through the SMS competencies.
  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field or equivalent experience is required.
  • Has passed or is working towards passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam required for Engineer in Training registration.

Responsibilities

  • Develop HVAC, plumbing and fire sprinkler calculations for building projects.
  • Interpret mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire codes for design application.
  • Work with NFPA standards to design and check systems.
  • Size ductwork, plumbing and fire sprinkler distribution systems in building structures.
  • Use applicable software to draft and model HVAC, plumbing and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Generate specifications for HVAC, plumbing and fire system equipment using software tools.
  • Review HVAC, plumbing and fire sprinkler drawings/specifications and ensure they meet requirements.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to achieve project milestones.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
  • May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.
