About The Position

The Tribal Heritage Building Manager is responsible for the daily operation, scheduling, and stewardship of the Tribal Longhouse. This position ensures the Longhouse is used in accordance with Tribal policies, cultural protocols, and community needs. The Manager coordinates ceremonial, educational, and community events; oversees scheduling and logistics; manages contractors and projects; and ensures proper documentation and preservation of cultural integrity.

Requirements

Knowledge of Tribal culture, traditions, and ceremonial protocols (or willingness to learn).
Strong organizational and scheduling skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Experience coordinating events, facilities, or community spaces.
Ability to work respectfully with elders, cultural leaders, staff, and community members.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Contributes to a favorable public image of the Tribe by establishing and maintaining relationships and participation in the community.
High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree required and two years of experience in facilities management, event coordination, project management, or cultural programming; or satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
Intermediate computer skills using word processing, spreadsheets (i.e., Word for Windows, Excel, Access, etc.).
Knowledge of Puyallup Tribal history, culture and language required.
Ability to interact tactfully and positively with Tribal members, all levels of staff and management.
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common professional journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from staff and regulatory agencies.
Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
Ability to effectively present information to management, employees and groups of people.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral or written format.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to physically perform essential job tasks.
Must have and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of auto insurance; valid driver’s license must not contain any restrictions that would prohibit the employee’s use of a tribal vehicle.
Must pass a criminal background check; must not have any felony convictions.
Must be able to periodically pass criminal background check and must not have any felony convictions during employment.
Ability to operate a typewriter, personal computer, multi-line telephone, calculator, facsimile and photocopier.
Ability to read, write, communicate, and interpret information accurately in English.
Ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work.
Requires the ability to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
Occasionally required to stand and walk.
Occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

Develops, implements, and enforces policies and procedures governing the use of the Tribal Longhouse.
Ensures building use aligns with Tribal cultural values, traditions, and protocols.
Oversees general building operations, safety, and upkeep in coordination with relevant departments.
Manages building scheduling for ceremonial, educational (school-related), and community events.
Coordinates employee schedules and maintains an up-to-date building calendar.
Oversees traditional and cultural events held within the facility.
Assigns tasks per project or event to staff, volunteers, or contractors as appropriate.
Manages building-related projects from planning through completion.
Oversees contractor management, including coordination, compliance, and performance monitoring.
Coordinates logistics for events and projects, including equipment, supplies, and space setup.
Monitors and evaluates project outcomes to ensure goals are met.
Leads short- and long-term planning related to building use, improvements, and programming.
Maintains accurate documentation related to scheduling, events, contracts, policies, and outcomes.
Maintains oversight of the Tribal Longhouse budget.
Prepares reports and updates for Tribal leadership as required.
Works closely with Tribal departments, employees, and community members.
Serves as a point of contact for building use requests and external partners when appropriate.
Ensures clear communication regarding expectations, schedules, and cultural protocols.
Performs other duties as assigned.
