Building Inspector (Code Enforcement)
About The Position
Works under the general supervision of the Senior Inspector to make inspections to enforce and/or ensure conformance to Codes of Memphis and Shelby County Codes Enforcement. This role involves inspecting new buildings and dwellings, meeting with contractors, architects, engineers, and homeowners, and ensuring that construction procedures and materials meet approved standards. The position requires reviewing approved plans, issuing work stop orders and citations for non-compliance, maintaining accurate records, and taking corrective action against code violations. Additionally, the role includes patrolling for work done without permits, staying current with technical publications, and assisting with the training of new inspectors.
Requirements
- Five (5) years of experience in the building construction industry
- High school diploma or possess a GED
- Knowledge of codes, laws and ordinances relating to the construction of various structures.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in construction.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
- Ability to detect deviations from regulatory codes.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to independently research and gather information.
- Knowledge of OSHA laws.
- Knowledge of the International Building Codes, International Residential and other applicable codes.
- Ability to enforce codes and regulations.
- Ability to work with the public.
- Ability to discuss, explain, and interpret codes requirements.
- Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.
- Ability to perform detailed inspections.
- Ability to communicate effectively both, orally and in writing.
- Ability to use sound judgment in decision making.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Must have a valid Tennessee “Class D” Driver’s License.
- Must be a certified Building Inspector (ICC) or obtain certification within twelve (12) months of date of employment.
Responsibilities

- Takes corrective action against code violations.
- Patrols and inspection of work being done without permits.
- Stays current with technical publications.
- Assists with the training of new inspectors.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
