About The Position

The City of Carmel is looking for a Building Inspector/Plans Examiner II to help ensure the homes, businesses, and spaces taking shape across Carmel meet the standards that keep our community safe and strong. You’ll be out in the field, working with contractors, property owners, and City staff while building your expertise in codes, inspections, and construction standards. If you have experience in construction, the building trades, maintenance, mechanical systems, or a related field, this could be your opportunity to turn that experience into a rewarding career in public service. Previous building inspection experience is preferred but not required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge and experience in construction, building trades, maintenance, mechanical systems, or a related field.
  • Ability to read and understand basic building plans.
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills.
  • Comfort working independently in the field and around active construction sites.
  • Ability to use computers, mobile devices, and related technology.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain required International Code Council (ICC) certifications within one year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous building inspection experience is preferred but not required.
  • Vocational or apprenticeship training and one to three years of related experience are preferred, but equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect residential and commercial construction at various stages, including foundations, framing, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Review plans, permits, and project information for compliance with applicable codes and City requirements.
  • Identify and document construction deficiencies and communicate required corrections.
  • Answer questions from contractors, property owners, and the public about permits, inspections, and construction requirements.
  • Assist with inspections of existing structures and buildings impacted by severe weather, fire, flooding, vehicle impacts, or other incidents.
  • Document inspections using mobile technology, electronic plans, and City inspection systems.
  • Build your expertise through ongoing training and professional certification.
