About The Position

The City of Anaheim Planning and Building Department is seeking an experienced Building Inspector III to join our Building Services team. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned building professional to apply advanced technical expertise while inspecting some of the City's most complex commercial, industrial, mixed-use, and multi-story construction projects. Building Inspector III is the advanced journey-level classification in the Building Inspector series. In this role, you will perform complex combination inspections, interpret and apply building codes, conduct structural safety investigations, and work collaboratively with contractors, architects, engineers, developers, property owners, and City staff to help ensure projects are safe, code-compliant, and completed efficiently. You will also serve as a technical resource for other inspectors, providing guidance on specialized inspections and complex code issues. The ideal candidate is an ICC-certified combination inspector who exercises sound professional judgment, communicates effectively, and is committed to delivering fair, consistent code enforcement with exceptional customer service. Requirements

  • Responsible journey level experience in conducting combination building inspections.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and protocols for conducting various types of building and construction inspections as they particularly apply to large scale, highly complex projects.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods used in various building construction craft areas, including applications, materials and tools from large-scale construction to installation of equipment and systems applicable to plumbing, electrical, mechanical, heating/ventilation/cooling and structural disciplines.
  • Knowledge of modern methods of building construction and basic principles of structural design.
  • Knowledge of laws, ordinances and codes regulating building construction.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety and fire prevention methods in construction.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard work place safety practices.
  • Knowledge of customer relations practices and etiquette.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications for buildings and construction and determine compliance of plans with codes and regulations.
  • Ability to inspect construction sites during construction and alteration and interpret, explain and enforce a wide range of Uniform Building Code provisions and regulations accurately and consistently, with courtesy and tact.
  • Ability to examine workmanship and materials, detect deviations from plans, standard construction practices and code requirements and identify defective and unsafe construction.
  • Ability to make sound judgments in complex, difficult inspections within established codes, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to resolve job-related issues with property owners, contractors, developers, architects, engineers and others, while exercising tact, diplomacy and good customer relations practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, customer focused relationships with those encountered in the course of work.
  • Possession of registration as a Certified Inspector from the International Code Council (ICC) in at least three disciplines is required prior to advancement to Building Inspector III.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License by date of appointment is required.
