About The Position

The building inspector will perform all work associated with the inspection of buildings for compliance with all International, Uniform, and National Building Codes adopted by the Board of County Commissioners. Duties may include, but are not limited to, performing building inspections for compliance with all building codes, reviewing permit applications for all types of building construction, writing correction notices for deficiencies, determining cost evaluations for building permits, analyzing submitted plans for construction type and occupancy group, determining building setbacks from property lines, reviewing and approving building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing documents for permits, and communicating with licensed design professionals, contractors, and owner-builders regarding building codes. The role also involves researching alternate methods of construction approved by ICC, IAPMO, and other approved agencies, complying with Elko County policies, finishing assignments accurately and promptly, keeping the supervisor informed, communicating tactfully and skillfully, performing professionally under pressure, maintaining business confidence, and listening carefully and responding appropriately. The employee will represent the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation. May be required to be on-call and work occasional weekends and/or holidays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 4 years of progressive building-related construction experience; or 1 year of technical/vocational training in building codes; or equivalent combination of training and work experience
  • Knowledge of standard Building codes adopted by Elko County (ex. I.B.C., I.R.C., U.M.C., U.P.C., and the N.E.C.)
  • Knowledge of proper construction procedures, methods, and practices.
  • Knowledge of basic enforcement principles regarding building and zoning code violations.
  • Knowledge of proper safety procedures for working in construction sites and around equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic zoning procedures and codes.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal and State codes, regulations, and laws regarding buildings and construction.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills especially in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to work with and communicate technical information to the public.
  • Ability to read, interpret, apply and explain basic building plans, blueprints, specifications, and building codes.
  • Ability to organize time and coordinate with the public and contractors to perform work efficiently.
  • Ability to attend training and apply the knowledge obtained to practice.
  • Ability to interpret and apply knowledge of the building codes regulating construction.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, contractors, County employees, other government employees, and community groups.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to complete basic single and multi-family residential inspections.
  • Ability to complete electrical services for different type applications inspections.
  • Ability to complete foundation systems for Manufactured Home single-family residential inspections.
  • Ability to complete foundations and footings inspections.
  • Ability to complete decks and patio covers inspections.
  • Ability to complete accessory structures inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Perform building inspections for compliance with all building codes.
  • Review permit applications for all types of building construction.
  • Write correction notices for deficiencies in construction jobs as needed.
  • Determine cost evaluations for building permits.
  • Analyze submitted plans for the type of building construction and occupancy group.

  • Review plans and communicate with licensed design professionals, contractors, and owner-builders for compliance with adopted building codes.
  • Write letters to licensed design professionals, contractors, and owner-builders concerning questions regarding building codes.
  • Research alternate methods of construction approved by ICC, IAPMO, and other approved agencies for alternative construction methods.
  • Comply with all Elko County policies and department procedures.
  • Accurately, dependably, and promptly finish assignments.
  • Keep supervisor informed of work status and pertinent issues.
  • Communicate tactfully and skillfully with co-workers, customers, and the general public.
  • Perform professionally and efficiently under pressure.
  • Maintain business confidence.
  • Listen carefully and effectively and respond appropriately.
  • Represent the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
