About The Position

The Building and Grounds Operations Manager is responsible for the administrative, financial, and daily operation and maintenance of buildings and grounds of the State Fairgrounds during annual State Fair and non-fair times to ensure facilities and services meet the needs of building occupants and fairground visitors in an efficient, economical and safe fashion.

Requirements

  • Exceptional people skills as there is daily interaction working with permanent and seasonal staff, inmates, event planners, and the general public.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
  • Excellent at juggling and prioritizing multiple tasks and projects while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Motivated by a work environment where each day's duties may be different.
  • Quick on their feet and able to identify solutions when problems occur.

  • Well-rounded knowledge of facilities and grounds maintenance and repairs.
  • Knowledge of methods and practices of general building and facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Knowledge of general building construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of planning, scheduling, supervision, and program administration.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions appropriate for maintenance and repair projects.
  • Ability to effectively manage staff.
  • Ability to perform record keeping and report writing.
  • Ability to maintain positive, harmonious relationships with other employees, partners, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to lead your team with integrity and create a positive environment where your team members feel valued and supported.
  • Ability to serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile people.
  • Ability to accurately estimate building costs and material requirements.
  • Ability to operate construction equipment and power tools.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Ability to respond swiftly, rationally, and decisively to emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to have a full range of physical motion to operate manual, electric powered, and/or gas-powered grounds-keeping equipment and machines.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate maturity and flexibility in working with diverse populations and personalities with competing priorities.
  • Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations effectively and professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Organizing, directing, guiding and evaluating all maintenance staff in the maintenance of grounds, buildings and equipment.
  • Overseeing custodial and ground maintenance services for several events.
  • Maintaining the physical assets of the fairgrounds including buildings, grounds, equipment, and supplies.
  • Performing job and safety training for staff.
