About The Position

Designed to support the development of foundational social work competencies within a school-based setting. This learning experience emphasizes relationship-building, advocacy, ethical practice, and understanding how social work skills are applied to promote student success. Under the supervision of a licensed school social worker, the BSW intern gains hands-on exposure to school-based social work practice through guided participation, observation, and supported engagement with students, families, and staff. Interns learn how social workers contribute to student achievement, equity, and social-emotional well-being. This internship is unpaid and aligned with the professional ethical standards of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

Requirements

  • Enrollment as a Bachelor-level Social Work student
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required
  • No professional work experience required
  • Experience working in a school or other multidisciplinary setting
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate problem-solving skills
  • Intermediate interpersonal relations and teamwork skills
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with community agencies/resources
  • Ability to engage in ongoing professional growth and building/district professional activities
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural humility and leadership, modeling an equity lens and engaging in trauma-informed practices

Responsibilities

  • Provide school-based, multi-tiered support, as well as social, emotional, and behavioral intervention services to individuals, groups, and parents/guardians.
  • Observe social, emotional, and behavioral assessments to maximize student achievement and success, including data collection for behavior interventions and monitoring progress.
  • Work collaboratively with the site-based school social worker, teachers, and teaching assistants, to assist with implementation of interventions to meet the needs of students.
  • Observe and assist in school-wide safety efforts, including exposure to crisis prevention and intervention procedures.
  • Prioritize time effectively, working with supervisor to identify specific goals and priorities for learning.
  • Support family outreach and engagement efforts that strengthen Family-School Community partnerships and connect students to community resources.
  • Participate in regular supervision to establish learning goals, engage in reflective practice, and support ongoing professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
