About The Position

Steel Ceilings, a subsidiary of Armstrong World Industries, is seeking an experienced operator to set up and operate a Bruck perforating press in its Johnstown, Ohio metal fabrication facility. The position supports production of the Armstrong MetalWorks product portfolio and requires full ownership of the machine during the shift, including setup, changeovers, adjustments, quality verification, and independent troubleshooting. The operator works with varying materials and production volumes, from long, high-speed runs to short custom orders, while maintaining precision tolerances and production efficiency. The operator prepares and aligns tooling and feed systems, adjusts machine controls and parameters, validates first pieces, and monitors product quality and machine performance. The role includes interpreting drawings and specifications, inspecting and documenting product results, monitoring tooling condition, performing routine preventive maintenance, and working with maintenance technicians on complex repairs. Safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and required PPE, must be followed in a manufacturing environment with high-speed press equipment, noise, and moving equipment. The role is suited to a self-directed operator with strong mechanical skills who can balance speed, accuracy, and quality while requiring minimal supervision. Available shifts are 2nd shift, 2:45 PM–11:00 PM, and 3rd shift, 10:45 PM–7:00 AM, with shift differentials of $1.00 and $2.00 per hour, respectively.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform machine setups and changeovers.
  • Experience maintaining tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Proven troubleshooting ability in a production environment.
  • Advanced mechanical aptitude and a strong understanding of press mechanics and tooling alignment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and production documentation.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools.
  • Ability to maintain production quality in both high-speed and short-run environments.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to handle and maneuver sheet metal materials.
  • Comfort working in a manufacturing environment with noise and moving equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Perforating press experience; equivalent experience with stamping presses, punch presses, or similar high-speed mechanical presses is acceptable.
  • Direct experience operating a Bruck perforator.
  • Experience with aluminum and light-gauge steel in high-precision applications.
  • Experience holding tight tolerances in production settings.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, calibrate, operate, and perform changeovers on the Bruck perforating press according to job orders, engineering drawings, and production schedules.
  • Prepare tooling, punches, dies, gagbars, feed systems, and clamping devices for the required perforation patterns and materials.
  • Program or adjust machine controls and parameters, including feed rates, stroke frequency, and applicable servo or PC software.
  • Install and align die-based perforation tooling; configure material alignment, feed systems, and stroke settings.
  • Validate first pieces and make precision adjustments before releasing production.
  • Independently diagnose and correct hole misalignment, feed tracking issues, burrs, tooling wear or breakage, material distortion, and dimensional drift.
  • Optimize stroke rates and feed settings to balance product quality and throughput, maintaining runability in both long production runs and short custom orders.
  • Reduce downtime through proactive adjustments and mechanical awareness.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, specifications, hole patterns, spacing, tolerances, and material information.
  • Measure and inspect perforated products using precision measurement tools and ensure compliance with quality and MetalWorks perforation standards.
  • Document inspections and production results, identify defects, and implement corrective actions.
  • Meet established performance, scrap, and efficiency standards; production metrics are tracked and reported daily.
  • Clean, lubricate, visually inspect, and perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on the press and associated equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control issues and collaborate with maintenance technicians on complex repairs or upgrades.
  • Monitor tooling condition and wear patterns, and assist with installation and setup of newly purchased OEM pattern dies.
  • Follow company safety standards, OSHA policies, and lockout/tagout procedures; wear required PPE and maintain an organized work area.
