About The Position

This position is accountable for making detailed inspections of bridges and structures throughout the district to fulfill the requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and those of district and state inspection policies. It involves the preparation of necessary reports and forms, input of required data into the Bridge Inspection System (BIS) and Illinois Structure Information System (ISIS), and providing maintenance recommendations to ensure public safety. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience OR Seven years engineering experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires district-wide and state-wide travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Requires overtime.
  • Ability to work at heights, within confined spaces, near traffic and utilize respirators.
  • Certified National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) Team Leader and a Bridge Element Level Inspection Team Leader as defined by the Bureau of Bridges and Structures Structural Services Manual Sections 3.4.2 and 3.4.3.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, on a day-to-day basis, the Bridge Inspection team in the continuing detailed field inspection of bridges and structures throughout the district to ensure compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Bridge Element Inspection, and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Structural Services Manual.
  • Performs underwater inspections around river piers, calculates streambed elevations and cover depths, and obtains streamed cross-sections to meet the requirements of the NBIS and the IDOT Structural Services Manual.
  • Conducts field inspections involving fracture critical structures, pin and link assemblies, underwater bridge inspection and scour analysis to meet the requirements of the NBIS.
  • Conducts visual inspection of bridges to identify damaged or deteriorated components; provides records, sketches and photographs of deficiencies; and makes appropriate recommendations for maintenance, repair, or further structural analysis.
  • Prepares bridge inspection forms, sketches, and reports under the direction of the Bridge Inspection Engineer.
  • Enters inspection data, enters maintenance work candidates, runs reports and analyzes information from the Structure Information Management System (SIMS), and Bridge Information System (BIS).
  • Conducts inspections of sign structures in accordance with the Sign Structure Inspection Manual.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
