About The Position

Greater Seacoast Community Health (GSCH) is seeking a compassionate and encouraging Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join their WIC team. This part-time role, working 8 hours weekly, provides peer support, education, and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in the Portsmouth & Somersworth, NH area. The position is ideal for someone with personal breastfeeding experience who is passionate about helping other mothers feel supported, confident, and successful in their breastfeeding journey. The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will become a trusted source of support for mothers navigating this important stage of parenthood.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Personal experience successfully breastfeeding at least one child
• Previous participation in or involvement with the WIC program
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Compassionate, supportive, and professional approach
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Reliable transportation and ability to travel between WIC sites
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment

Nice To Haves

• Experience mentoring, coaching, or supporting others
• Interest in maternal and child health

Responsibilities

• Provide breastfeeding encouragement, education, and emotional support to WIC participants
• Maintain contact with pregnant and breastfeeding mothers through phone calls and follow-ups
• Share practical breastfeeding experiences and guidance
• Work collaboratively with WIC staff and healthcare providers
• Refer families to appropriate resources when needed
• Support community outreach and breastfeeding awareness efforts
