About The Position

The Breast Imaging Radiology Quality Improvement Specialist Navigator, a mammography technologist certified as a Breast Health Navigator, assures competent, compassionate care for patients and families in the Breast Imaging Department. The Breast Imaging Navigator will ensure the proper preparation of patients for breast imaging exams and procedures, facilitate expeditious scheduling of patients including all breast procedures, perform pre-procedure assessments and provide patient instructions, provide care for patients during procedures as needed, assist the radiologists in managing any procedure-related complications, provide post-procedure instructions, follow up with patients, communicate pathology results to patients, maintain and update patient medical record including addenda to radiology reports with pathology, and breast reporting system with pathology results. The technologist navigator functions as the point person in the division for patient education, patient safety, and will assist breast imaging patients in need of immediate care, working with the radiologists, staff, and medical response team when necessary. The navigator will report directly to the Operations Manager on-site.

Responsibilities

Provide competent, compassionate care to our patients.
Articulate the role of the Breast Imaging Navigator to the patient, family, and healthcare team members.
Provide pre-procedure assessment, instructions, and education to patients in person or initiate pre-procedure telephone contact about the recommended procedure(s).
Schedule all breast imaging-guided procedures according to regulatory guidelines.
Coordinate and expedite patient care, including scheduling all breast procedures such as ultrasound-guided, stereotactic, and MRI-guided procedures, or follow-up appointments.
Conduct post-procedure follow-up and patient education.
Respond to patient phone inquiries promptly.
Consult with referring physician(s) regarding appropriate pre-procedure lab work or medications as needed at the request of the radiologist.
Maintain and update the breast reporting system (Epic), consolidating all pertinent medical data including pathology results.
Communicate results and recommendations from biopsy results to the patient as per the recommendation of the radiologist in a timely way (same day the results are available).
Update radiology reports with pathology addendums for radiologists and update pathology entry in the breast reporting system.
Communicate plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other health team members.
Facilitate patient appointments at the breast center and cancer center.
Participate in the improvement of patient care services and division services.
Function as a member of the Breast Imaging division by participating in operational staff meetings, teaching rounds, case conferences, tumor board, and other meetings as necessary
Teach and direct all personnel for whom he/she is responsible and back up coverage for vacation/sick time.
Participate in daily operational activities necessary for a safe patient/staff environment.
Utilize resources efficiently to facilitate optimal patient care.
Provide input to the Section Head and Operations Manager regarding the division's needs.
Participate in division leadership meetings for formulation of policies and procedures related to procedures and patient care.
Document pathology results in the breast reporting system (Epic) accurately and concisely.
Initiate pathology/imaging concordance process by communicating pathology results to the radiologists and per radiologist recommendation regarding concordance, creating addendums to the radiologist procedure report, and notifying the radiologist.
Document pathology and recommendation in the breast reporting system (Epic) and notify the referring physician or responsible physician of the recommendation.
Perform weekly QA audit process to ensure completion of all pathology/patient follow-up.
Document verbal and written correspondence with patients in the appropriate patient system (Epic).
Maintain schedule for patient procedures (including MRI biopsies).
Maintain and update clinical knowledge skills required for a Breast Imaging Health Navigator.
Adhere to Department of Radiology requirements for required training.
Identify your own learning needs and goals and develop a plan to meet these needs/goals.
Maintain and develop professional practice through continuing educational and/or academic programs.
Contribute to relevant committees, professional meetings, continuing medical education and/or academic programs.
