About The Position

The Branch Supervisor manages daily operations of the Life Science Library by overseeing service desk operations, providing customer and reference services, and ensuring access to library materials and services. The role leads and supports staff, collaborates with library partners to support collections and access, and provides technology assistance to meet user needs, while contributing to the overall effectiveness of library operations through teamwork and service coverage as needed. Branch Supervisors are members of the In‑Person User Experience Branch Services unit of UT Libraries.

Requirements

  • High School diploma (or GED) and four years of library work experience or relevant customer service experience (retail, bookstore, service industry, etc.).
  • Demonstrated strong user/customer service skills and orientation.
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming library environment for all library users and staff.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal skills and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort working with printers, scanners, and computers.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently make decisions, manage workflows, and solve problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

  • Experience using library circulation systems.
  • Experience providing research help using library resources.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee service desk activities.
  • Provide customer services to library users.
  • Explain and support library policies and procedures.
  • Provide reference assistance and referrals for life science subjects in person and remotely.
  • Supervise and contribute to the circulation of library materials and stacks maintenance activities.
  • Supervise, hire, and train staff and student workers.
  • Review and approve timesheets.
  • Maintain library's statistical reports.
  • Oversee processing and supervision of course materials.
  • Oversee materials paging and document delivery/scanning for library.
  • Collaborate with liaison librarians, the Collection Management Cross-functional Team, and the Collection Logistics team on collection development and space planning.
  • Provide technical services assistance.
  • Work with Content Management staff to identify and correct access problems.
  • Provide computer assistance and troubleshoot software and equipment.
  • Participate in departmental, unit, and library meetings.
  • Serve on committees, functional teams, and working groups, as stakeholders, and/or projects as needed and related to departmental responsibilities.
  • Attend training initiatives as directed by the Manager of Branch Services.
  • Other related functions as assigned including providing intermittent service coverage for other library locations as needed.
