About The Position

The Boston Police Cadet Program is an on-the-job training program for Boston's youth seeking a career in law enforcement. The Program is a minimum of a two-year commitment. Cadets rotate throughout the Department in various assignments and shifts, including Headquarters, District Stations, and other specialized units throughout the Department. If appointed, Cadets must complete a rigorous 4-week Cadet Training Program at the Boston Police Academy, which includes both academic and physical training. Cadets do not carry firearms and do not have the power of arrest. Cadets are considered civilian employees of the City of Boston for the purposes of workers' compensation.

Requirements

  • Be between 18 and 25 years of age by July 12, 2026.
  • Reside in the City of Boston and have maintained consecutive residency for the last two years (July 12, 2024 - present).
  • High school graduate or possess an equivalency certificate by July 12, 2026.
  • Possess an active, valid Massachusetts Driver's License by July 12, 2026.
  • Meet the same physical fitness standards required of Boston Police Recruit Officers.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and maintain attention to detail as required by the job.
  • Be a United States Citizen, Naturalized U.S. Citizen, or Permanent Lawful Resident
  • A comprehensive background investigation, including criminal and driving history checks
  • In-Person interview
  • Drug testing
  • A pre-employment physical examination
  • A psychological evaluation

Responsibilities

  • Perform clerical and administrative tasks, including filing, record-keeping, and processing reports to support department operations.
  • Answer and direct phone calls, providing information and assistance to the public and law enforcement personnel as needed.
  • Conduct data entry and database management, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of police records and reports.
  • Operate department vehicles under supervision for official duties, including transporting equipment and assisting officers in non-emergency capacities.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining traffic barriers for road closures, parades, crime scenes, and public events.
  • Support various department functions and special projects, performing additional tasks as assigned by supervisors.
