A Barnes & Noble Bookseller is an integral member of the bookselling team, welcoming customers, answering questions, and helping readers find appropriate titles and products. The role also supports store operations by maintaining attractive displays, unpacking and shelving deliveries, keeping the store tidy, and operating registers to provide professional customer service. Booksellers are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility, a positive and energetic approach, consideration toward colleagues, cheerful customer service, and a willingness to learn. They are trained to use store technology, maintain merchandise presentation and cleanliness, operate registers, receive and shelve deliveries, locate products using available tools and colleagues’ knowledge, support the café when needed, and follow loss-prevention and de-escalation procedures. As knowledge develops, Booksellers build expertise across books and other store categories, maintain sections and backstock, make recommendations, and support sales objectives and product launches. The role involves physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and frequent walking. Employees may also work at other stores when needed and able. Booksellers are expected to comply with company policies and procedures and may progress to Senior Bookseller as they demonstrate mastery of the role’s skills.
