A Bookseller is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble bookselling team, welcoming customers, answering questions, and connecting readers with suitable titles and products. The role also helps maintain attractive store presentation and efficient operations by unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and serving customers at the register. Booksellers are expected to demonstrate reliability, flexibility, a positive and helpful approach to customers and colleagues, willingness to learn, and enthusiasm for bookselling. Booksellers learn and perform operational tasks including using registers and other technology; merchandising and maintaining store cleanliness and presentation; receiving, unpacking, and accurately shelving deliveries; locating books and other products using available tools and team knowledge; supporting the café team when needed; and following loss-prevention and de-escalation procedures. The work involves physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and substantial walking. Booksellers may work at other stores when able and needed to support the wider Cluster. As their experience grows, Booksellers develop knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, and other store categories. They use that knowledge to maintain sections and backstock, recommend books, assist customers, and support sales objectives and new releases. The role complies with company policies and procedures and offers a development path toward Senior Bookseller as skills and expertise grow. Benefits depend on scheduled weekly hours and location. Employees scheduled for fewer than 20 hours per week receive an employee discount, EAP, and sick pay. Those scheduled for 20 to 29.99 hours receive those benefits plus paid time off, including paid maternity and parental leave, company-paid holidays, transit, and a 401(k) with company match. Those scheduled for 30 or more hours receive those benefits plus comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits, healthcare and dependent-care spending accounts, disability benefits, life insurance, and tuition reimbursement. Benefits are subject to plan terms and may vary by location or state regulations.
