About The Position

Under general direction of the Library Director, the Bookmobile and Outreach Services Coordinator leads Hedberg Public Library's mobile library service and related outreach efforts, bringing library materials, programs, technology, information, and connection directly to people throughout Janesville and the broader service community. This position is responsible for planning and operating bookmobile service, managing the bookmobile collection, developing community partnerships, coordinating outreach stops and events, evaluating service impact, supervising assigned staff, volunteers, and interns, and ensuring that mobile library services are welcoming, reliable, safe, and responsive to community needs. The Bookmobile and Outreach Services Coordinator oversees public service, community engagement, collections, programs, routes, staff and volunteers, and data-informed service planning. The position represents the library at community locations and works across departments to provide inclusive, well-coordinated services that advance Hedberg Public Library’s mission.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and at least three years of relevant experience in public libraries, outreach, community engagement, programming, education, social service, customer service, public service operations, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is required.
  • A valid, state-issued driver’s license at time of hire is required.
  • Access to personal or public transportation for job-related duties.
  • Working knowledge of public library services, collections, programs, and community engagement practices, or the ability to learn them quickly.
  • General knowledge of operating or managing a bookmobile, mobile library service, outreach program, branch library service, or community-based public service program.
  • Organizational and time management skills to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbally and in writing, paired with a strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Collaboration skills to effectively work with others to achieve common goals through communication teamwork, and problem-solving.
  • Project management skills to guide, manage, and direct projects in alignment with the library’s strategic plan.
  • Critical thinking skills to effectively analyze situations and solve complex or technical problems in a timely manner.
  • Accurate record-keeping and data-reporting skills to prepare and present standard reports.
  • Basic level of technical proficiency skills, including computer applications and software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to compose routine correspondence and routine reports in a clear, concise, logical, and effective manner, utilizing proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and tone.
  • Ability to provide readers' advisory, basic reference, technology assistance, and circulation service, or the ability to learn these functions.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, teens, adults, older adults, families, educators, caregivers, community partners, and people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and compute percentages.
  • Ability to effectively make presentations to small and large groups of individuals, manage public speaking obligations, and successfully communicate with the general public.
  • Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.
  • Ability to maintain a valid, state-issued driver’s license.
  • Has regular work contact with City employees, community groups, business community, non-profit agencies, other governmental agencies and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates the bookmobile safely at scheduled stops, events, schools, neighborhoods, senior communities, and partner locations.
  • Coordinates routes, setup, technology readiness, safety checks, vehicle condition, supplies, and daily follow-up.
  • Recommends schedule and service changes based on community need, usage data, staffing, and partner feedback.
  • Provides welcoming service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Assists with library cards, accounts, circulation, holds, readers’ advisory, basic reference, technology help, digital resources, and community information.
  • Connects patrons to library services, staff Services Coordinators, and community resources.
  • Maintains a current, attractive, inclusive, and responsive bookmobile collection.
  • Works with Collection Services to select, rotate, display, weed, and evaluate materials.
  • Uses data, patron requests, and staff observations to improve the collection.
  • Plans and supports outreach stops, bookmobile events, and community engagement activities.
  • Builds partnerships with schools, childcare providers, senior communities, social service agencies, neighborhood groups, and community organizations.
  • Represents HPL at community events and promotes services that reduce barriers to access.
  • Coordinates bookmobile schedules, service updates, marketing requests, flyers, handouts, and public-facing information.
  • Communicates schedule changes, weather impacts, vehicle issues, and service interruptions to staff, partners, and patrons.
  • Tracks service statistics, patron feedback, partner contacts, circulation, library card activity, program attendance, and other assigned measures.
  • Uses data to recommend changes to stops, schedules, collections, programs, and service practices.
  • Prepares reports and service summaries as requested.
  • Supervises, trains, schedules, and supports assigned staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Develops procedures, checklists, schedules, and workflow documentation.
  • Provides coaching and communicates expectations clearly.
  • Follows all vehicle, safety, emergency, confidentiality, and incident-reporting procedures.
  • Maintains a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Monitors weather, road, parking, site, and crowd conditions to ensure safe service.
  • Participates in professional development and library-wide planning.
  • Supports HPL’s mission, policies, service standards, and strategic priorities.
  • Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
  • Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
  • All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated.
