About The Position

The Boilermaker - Welder Apprentice, 1.0 position must complete responsibilities delegated by the service manager that include the service and repair of boilers, burners and related accessories. This effort involves regular contact with the end users, contractors, Authorized Inspectors and also occasionally with specifying engineers who specify our equipment. Our expectation is for the Boilermaker to be performing pressure vessel repairs, general repair of boilers, estimating service work, keeping the scheduler of the work informed of daily work progress, custodian of company truck, tools, equipment and supplies and the monitoring of his own billings, costs and inventory. An inside administrative person provides office support for this position. Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to attend factory training for boiler pressure vessel welders as the schedule permits.
  • Experience with operation of boilers, pumps and boiler auxiliary equipment.
  • Must have good communication skills and the ability to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must be certified in the 6G welding position and able to be certified as an employee of our company.
  • Must be capable of performing repairs on boilers and pressure vessels according to ASME and NBIC standards.
  • Knowledge in water treatment and how it relates to operation of the equipment.
  • Basic mathematics, algebra, and formula knowledge are required.
  • Must have very strong reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Must be insurable with no major infractions.

  • Two years of technical school, community college or trade school
  • One year of related experience in similar industry.

Responsibilities

  • Complete service reports on the job and turn in to the office on the next time in but no later than the following Monday morning. All reports are to be signed by the customer before leaving the job site.
  • Keep sales personnel informed of ongoing service and problems with new and existing projects.
  • Do what it takes to make our company successful with the product lines we represent and the customers we serve.
  • Package the sale of service contracts with our boiler lines.
  • Assist in providing 24-hr service by being “on call” on a rotating basis.
  • Understand the requirements of ASME Code repairs and its impact on estimating, inspections, welding procedures and material control.
  • Attend all required bi-monthly safety meetings and training as requested.
  • Repair and/or replace refractory, gaskets, parts, and miscellaneous controls.
  • Perform hydrostatic pressure testing of boilers.
  • Perform maintenance on boilers, pumps and auxiliary equipment.
  • Open and inspect boilers, with the understanding of the design and construction.
  • Identify tell-tale signs of potential problems with boilers, i.e.: tube leakage, scaling, pitting, metals discoloration and refractory failures.
  • Clean the fire and watersides along with installing new gaskets.
  • Perform refractory repairs and replacement.
  • Identify potential problems when lack of water treatment is performed.
  • Troubleshoot valves, motors and safety devices.
  • Read and understand mechanical drawings. Along with the ability to make modifications to the equipment per these drawings.
  • Perform pipe fitting to ASME, state and local codes.
  • Evaluate basic boiler room systems (steam and hydronic), gather information and help solve problems.
  • Complete work orders, all required forms, summaries, and checklist daily or as required in procedures manual.
  • Produce detailed but concise quotations pertaining to customer requirements.
  • Appraise the customer’s service needs for the repair of various products including boilers, pressure vessels, burners, boiler accessories, and other heat producing equipment.
  • Further your knowledge in these areas and any others that will be applicable for our company.
  • Provide some ASME boiler code application support as needed on the various boilers and pressure vessels to assist in proper equipment repair, operation and selection.
  • Display a willingness to learn, and to expand in the position.
  • Be very detailed in paperwork.
