About The Position

Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for a Boiler Technician. The primary function of the Boiler Technician is to perform the operation, maintenance, repair, and monitoring of the boiler plant, steam distribution system, and related equipment to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of steam and hot water to campus facilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in the mechanical or building trades.
  • Valid Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the operation of gas and oil fired boilers; operates manual controls, valves and steam and water lines; maintains temperatures in selected buildings by operating valves and air handlers through computerized energy management system; inspects and checks instruments; recalibrates controls for most efficient use of energy; adjusts controls to maintain continuous supply of steam and hot water to campus buildings; installs new equipment; makes alterations to existing equipment; performs preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps, air compressors, steam lines and turbines; performs general plumbing and electrical work relating to equipment; Works assigned shifts, including alternate shifts as needed, sometimes on short notice; maintain constant steam header pressures; monitors plant operations and responds appropriately to operational issues and emergency situations.
  • Clean water tanks; check and maintain pumps; repacks valves; washes and cleans boiler drums and tubes in boilers; checks and repairs fire boxes; maintains condensate return pump, steam and return valves, header valves and pipes; performs routine maintenance of plumbing and pipe fitting of equipment when necessary; periodically paints equipment and plant floors.
  • Monitors gauges; charts and recorders; records gas and oil usage; records make-up water usage; recharges water softener; operates oxygen analyzer and checks blowdown control; monitors steam valves and air handlers operating on time and temperature control programs.
  • Answers telephone on holidays, weekends and after office hours. Summons appropriate personnel in emergencies; maintains records of temperature and rainfall for United States Weather Bureau; perform general housekeeping duties to floors, walls and equipment; receives freight and mail when storeroom is closed; periodically checks Physical Plant building and locks doors as appropriate; periodically checks walk-through tunnels and mechanical systems outside of power plant; distributes keys to motor pool vehicles when offices are closed; monitors computer for campus radio station nightly; maintains awareness of building occupancy during non-business hours to support building security and emergency response; maintains familiarity with plant personnel responsibilities to support building security and emergency response; diligently monitors after-hours activity within the plant; performs other tasks as assigned.
