About The Position

Amherst College invites applications for the Boiler Operator position. This is a full-time, year-round position with an expected hourly range of $35.00-40.00. The salary offered will vary based on factors such as relevant education, training, experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory business considerations. The role supports Central Energy Plant efforts to safely and efficiently oversee, operate, and maintain the high-pressure steam plant and cogeneration plant. This includes performing repairs and maintenance on high-pressure boilers and associated equipment. The position requires attention to detail, problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and function efficiently under extreme conditions. The Boiler Operator works collaboratively with a diverse campus community in respectful, inclusive, and collaborative ways.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts 2nd Class Fireman's license or above
  • 1-3 years of experience operating a high-pressure boiler plant
  • Ability to maintain, service, and repair high-pressure boilers, pumps, valves, actuators, and associated controls and equipment.
  • Ability to make decisions on repair vs replace components, or how to keep systems on-line, avoid downtime, and get repairs done safely and quickly.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test.
  • Successful completion of required reference and background checks.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate all plant-related equipment, including high-pressure boilers, heat recovery steam generator, and dual fuel gas turbine generator set.
  • Clean and maintain building interior and exterior.
  • Test and maintain the reverse osmosis water purification system for nitrous oxide emission control.
  • Maintain and change ammonia bottles for emission control.
  • Repair pumps, motors, valves, actuators, and controls for boilers and associated equipment.
  • Record plant readings and data.
  • Blow down the boilers and water column.
  • Test high and low water alarms.
  • Test boiler water and adjust chemicals as needed.
  • Test and regenerate water softeners.
  • Clean oil strainers at the skid and burner.
  • Blow soot on both boilers.
  • Monitor, record, and receive fuel oil deliveries.
