About The Position

The Boiler-Chiller Tech II is responsible for troubleshooting and repairing Boiler-Chiller equipment while providing hands-on participation in installation, operation, and maintenance of LU assets. This is to include assorted fans, pumps, piping systems, unit heaters, drive systems, furnaces, boilers, and chillers, as well as all ancillary equipment. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job. As Essential Personnel, you must be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling, salting, etc. Maintenance personnel are essential to the overall success of LU and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events including Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, summer camps, amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Boiler-Chiller Supervisor and/or BC Tech III – Lead. Must be able to work 1st or 2nd shift, and must be able to be on a 7 day, “Available to work,” rotation, as needed. Must be familiar with the standard concepts, practices, and procedures of the Boiler-Chiller Trade. As well as, working knowledge of its Operations. Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing the job duties and responsibilities of the Boiler-Chiller Trade. While operating related equipment, including but not limited to; protective eyewear, ear protection, hardhat, gloves, safety toed shoes, masks, coveralls, reflective safety vest, and wearing a harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts to perform and complete assigned job. Monitors all boilers, chillers, heat recover pumps and fans. Performs chemical testing on heating water in boilers/heat exchangers and water in cooling towers, chillers, and other plant systems. Responsible for responding to alarms, troubleshooting, and making needed repairs. Must be able to think logically and solve problems that arise with little guidance. Must have basic knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions. Assist BC Tech III with startup, operation, and monitor chiller, and boiler systems. Assist BC Tech III with plumbing and gas piping associated with boilers and repair leaks. Efficiently and effectively enters various data into appropriate computer programs. Operates all other ancillary equipment related to Boiler room operation. Immediately reports any safety/accidents to Boiler Chiller Supervisor or BC Tech III. Safety items to report include but are not limited to; bodily injury, near misses, potential dangers, spills and/or any other accidents. Ensures good housekeeping practices. Assists other Boiler-Chiller Technicians, lead technicians and Supervisor. Provides HVAC Boiler/Chiller repair services before, during, and after special events as emergency needs arise. This is to include during scheduled and unscheduled work times. Remains abreast of existing and emergent technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks. Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience on troubleshooting repairs/preventative maintenance on commercial BC/HVAC systems.
  • Basic knowledge of computer operation for use on our energy management system and our preventative maintenance and work order system (CMMS: School dude).
  • Current EPA certification in refrigerants required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Must be able to understand and follow directions, and work under limited Supervision.
  • Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude.

  • Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyman card preferred.
  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access) and excellent computer skills desired.
