About The Position

Posterity Group LLC is seeking a Board Certified Perfusionist to staff the South Texas VA Healthcare System - Audie Murphy VA Medical Center. This role involves providing clinical perfusion services for various procedures including cardiopulmonary bypass, Cell Saver, Platelet Gel Production, Pacer, and Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) monitoring. The Perfusionist will collaborate with the Cardio/Thoracic Surgeon and Anesthesiologist, planning and evaluating perfusion requirements, and managing patient physiology, analysis, intervention, and hemodynamic stability during complex surgical procedures. Expert knowledge of cardio-pulmonary bypass methods, equipment, and procedures is essential, as is a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, physiology, physics, and mechanics of pacemakers. The role includes providing extracorporeal support, managing myocardial protection, hemofiltration/renal replacement therapy, anticoagulation and hemostasis, thermal regulation, blood gas and chemistry monitoring, and administering blood components, pharmaceuticals, and anesthetic agents. Additional responsibilities encompass heart failure therapy, ventricular assist device management, external/intra-aortic counter pulsation device oversight, temporary pacemaker management, extracorporeal transport, hemofiltration, aqua pheresis, and periodic flow augmentation therapy. Blood management services include autotransfusion oversight, platelet gel therapies, progenitor cell harvest, acute normovolemia hemodilution, phlebotomy, and hemostasis monitoring. Other duties involve isolated limb/organ perfusion, chemotherapeutic delivery, organ procurement and preservation, thermogenic lavage, renal replacement therapy, electrophysiological analysis, and therapeutic hyper/hypothermia. The Perfusionist must comply with all VHA and STVAHCS patient care policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure Joint Commission compliance.

Requirements

Certified with at least a minimum of two (2) years of experience.
Graduate of an accredited Allied Health Education Program School of Perfusion Technology.
Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
Demonstrate evidence of meeting continuing education requirements.
Performed a minimum of 1000 clinical cases.
Experience demonstrated in open heart surgery.
Experience demonstrated in autotransfusion.
Experience demonstrated in heart lung machine.
Experience demonstrated in membrane oxygenation.
Experience demonstrated in left/right heart bypass.
Experience demonstrated in intra-aortic balloon pumping.
Experience demonstrated in centrifugal ventricular assist device.

Responsibilities

Perform clinical perfusion services for cardiopulmonary bypass, Cell Saver, Platelet Gel Production, Pacer, and Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) monitoring.
Stay in-house when providing IABP monitoring.
Collaborate with the Cardio/Thoracic Surgeon and Anesthesiologist.
Plan, organize, coordinate and evaluate the clinical perfusion requirements for each patient’s cardiopulmonary surgical procedure.
Be responsible for the physiologic monitoring, analysis, intervention and hemodynamic stability of patients in the most complex types of surgical procedures.
Provide extracorporeal support, managing the physiologic and metabolic needs of the cardiac surgical patient.
Conduct extracorporeal circulation and ensure the safe management of cardio-respiratory functions during medical situations requiring cardio-respiratory support.
Manage myocardial protection through administration of prescribed cardioplegia solutions.
Perform hemofiltration/renal replacement therapy.
Manage anticoagulation and hemostasis, including analysis and intervention.
Oversee thermal regulation.
Monitor and analyze blood gas and blood chemistry.
Administer blood components, pharmaceuticals and anesthetic agents.
Provide heart failure therapy and clinical support services, including ventricular assist device management.
Oversee external counter pulsation and intra-aortic counter pulsation device management, including device insertion and monitoring.
Manage temporary pacemaker.
Manage transportation of extracorporeal supported patients for safe transport.
Perform hemofiltration and aqua pheresis.
Provide periodic flow augmentation therapy.
Provide blood management services, including autotransfusion oversight and cell salvage techniques.
Perform platelet gel therapies.
Conduct non-differential progenitor cell harvest.
Perform acute normovolemia hemodilution.
Perform phlebotomy.
Monitor and analyze hemostasis with an advanced working knowledge of anticoagulation therapies, blood component therapy, physiological implications of disease processes on hemostasis, blood banking procedures, blood storage and administration.
Perform isolated limb/organ perfusion.
Deliver chemotherapeutics, progenitor cells, gene therapy vectors to isolated limb/organ.
Perform organ procurement and preservation.
Conduct thermogenic lavage.
Perform renal replacement therapy.
Perform electrophysiological analysis.
Provide therapeutic hyperthermia and therapeutic hypothermia.
Comply with all appropriate and applicable patient care policies, procedures and regulations of the VHA and STVAHCS to ensure compliance with Joint Commission guidelines.
