About The Position
Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking an experienced Blaster to prepare steel surfaces for coating treatments. The role involves operating abrasive blasting equipment to create the surface profile needed for coatings to adhere properly to metal. The company provides training in surface-preparation techniques and in the use, care, and safe operation of its blasting equipment. Blasters must learn and safely perform work in tanks, voids, confined spaces, and at elevated heights, using staging, scaffolding, and lifting equipment such as hoists and scissor lifts. The role is based at Newport News Shipbuilding and is not eligible for telework. Multiple shifts are available, and overtime may be required. U.S. citizenship is required.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of hands-on blasting work experience; the role description also states that candidates should have 3+ years of blaster experience.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Willingness to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
- Ability to pass a physical agility test.
- Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily.
- Ability to lift at least 40 pounds and perform overhead work.
- Ability to work at extreme heights, outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, and in small, tight, confined spaces.
- Willingness to work in radiation areas with appropriate training and equipment.
- Ability to be clean shaven to wear a respirator.
- Willingness to work overtime as needed and any shift.

Responsibilities
- Operate blast equipment to prepare steel structures and create a profile that supports coating adhesion.
- Learn and apply surface-preparation techniques and the safe use and care of company-furnished blast equipment.
- Perform blasting operations safely in tanks, voids, confined spaces, and at elevated heights using staging, scaffolding, hoists, and scissor lifts.
- Take measurements or learn to take measurements.
