About The Position

Heats steel, bending material to varying degrees using a variety of manual and automated equipment. This role involves measuring completed product to verify conformance to specifications, utilizing various presses, and examining workpieces for defects. The Blacksmith will read work orders and blueprints to understand specifications, load metal pieces, and clean and lubricate machines. They will also heat metal pieces in forges or furnaces, apply methods to harden or temper metal, and inspect finished products. Additionally, the role includes repairing or replacing defective components, maintaining blacksmithing tools and equipment, and operating saws to cut metal. Filing, grinding, and smoothing rough edges are also part of the responsibilities, along with performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or acceptable equivalent.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, and other specifications in regard to forging process.
  • Ability to operate/use various measuring tools including micrometers, calipers and tape measures.
  • Hand tool experience -grinders, hammers, tongs, pliers, and other blacksmith tools.
  • Ability to manipulate heated material in forges/furnaces.
  • Team oriented.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Work in collaboration with other industrial professionals, such as welders, machinists, and engineers.
  • Required to wear all OSHA mandated safety equipment and to adhere to all company safety practices and policies.
  • Willingness to independently continue the learning process.
  • Conduct all interactions with customers (internal and external), vendors, field sales representatives, co-workers, and supervisors in a focused, positive, courteous and respectful manner.
  • Regular attendance is an essential element of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Measure completed product to verify conformance to specifications, using micrometers, gauges, calipers, templates, or rulers.
  • Utilize Di-Acro and Pedrick and hydraulic presses to accomplish tasks more efficiently.
  • Regularly stand, walk, twist, push and pull.
  • Examine completed workpieces for defects, such as chipped edges or marred surfaces and sort defective pieces according to types of flaws.
  • Read work orders to determine quantity and specifications, such as materials to be used, locations of cutting lines, or dimensions and tolerances.
  • Load metal pieces of material into dies or bending tools.
  • Clean and lubricate machines.
  • Position, align, and secure workpieces against fixtures or stops on machine beds or on dies.
  • Interpret complex blueprints, sketches, and other specifications before starting any forging process.
  • Heat metal pieces in forges or furnaces until hot enough to use hammers, tongs, and other tools to bend, cut, and shape the heated metal.
  • Apply various methods to harden or temper metal pieces, altering their physical properties as needed.
  • Read blueprints and job orders to determine product specifications and tooling instructions.
  • Inspect finished products to ensure they meet required specifications and quality standards.
  • Repair or replace defective or worn-out industrial components.
  • Maintaining and ensuring proper operation of blacksmithing tools and equipment.
  • Set up and operate Armada and Marvel saws to cut metal and other materials.
  • Select and install saw blades and other attachments according to specifications.
  • File, grind, and smooth rough edges and surfaces.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required by company management.
