About The Position

AECOM's Natural Resources team is seeking a Biologist II/Environmental Compliance Coordinator to join our group of Environmental practitioners in Southern California. This is an exciting opportunity to support industry leading projects and programs for an important client. This is a hybrid role based in our San Diego, California office. This position will provide office-based coordination for a San Diego-based utility client. Projects may include ESH (electrical systems hardening) for fire resiliency and operations and maintenance construction. Primary duties include coordination of general or focused biological surveys for wildlife, plants, and/or vegetation with the extensive biological resources project team. Experience conducting general species surveys for avian (including nest searching), herp, mammal, and invertebrate species, and/or experience conducting botany surveys and vegetation characterization and mapping is desired. The ideal candidate will excel at verbal and written communication, organization, problem solving, and responsiveness. The role will support large teams in a fast-paced work environment with exposure to a variety of natural resources and challenges with opportunities for growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, environmental engineering, land use planning, or a related field.
  • 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in natural resources/biological environmental compliance.
  • Valid Driver's license is required for this role.
  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • 4+ years of experience as an environmental compliance monitor and/or coordinator on projects involving regulatory compliance, preconstruction surveys, and construction monitoring for a variety of environmental resources.
  • Experience with protocol wildlife surveys, special-status plant surveys, habitat assessments, and/or wildlife tracking.
  • Experience in biological survey fieldwork, including vegetation monitoring utilizing line-intercept, transect, and/or Releve methods.
  • Prior environmental consulting is desired but not required.
  • Desktop biological constraints analysis.
  • Experience with flora and fauna in California and southwest U.S. preferred.
  • Familiarity with permit application requirements, and the typical challenges and strategies related to environmental permitting and construction compliance.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act.
  • Experience preparing preconstruction and post construction reports and deliverables.
  • Candidate must be flexible and willing to support multiple projects as needed.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team; be innovative and a problem solver.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Ability to create and maintain tracking spreadsheets and documents.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Biologist/Environmental Compliance Coordinator on multiple projects; including review and interpretation of project plans and permits; and schedule and staff surveyors, monitors, and technical experts.
  • Perform desktop and field assignments that require background in wildlife ecology and/or botany and ecological processes.
  • Work closely with the project manager and internal staff on compliance concerns requiring solutions, proactive planning, and adapting.
  • Preparation of technical reports, desktop analysis, conservation plans, and habitat management plans, or assisting with other natural resources related field surveys (i.e. aquatic resource surveys, general constraints surveys).
  • Coordination with internal and external stakeholders, issuing work to consultants, review of reports, compliance documentation, and direct coordination with construction personnel.
  • Support preparation of technical memorandums, compliance forms and reports, and other technical reports.
  • Support the Project Manager and other senior team members with administrative tasks, budget tracking and allocation, and invoice review.
  • Coordinate with design and construction personnel regarding constraints and scheduling.
  • Ensure assigned tasks stay on schedule and budget.
