This position involves performing laboratory techniques such as molecular biology (PCR, nucleic acid extractions specifically RNA), microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and western blot. The role may assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in providing technical supervision and assistance to students and volunteers. It also includes providing animal support services for faculty, participating in optimizing existing methods to study biological processes, and modifying existing guidelines for procedures. Responsibilities extend to scheduling Animal Services surgical suites, coordinating tasks, providing anesthesia and surgical support for multiple species, maintaining preclinical health records, administering medications, wound care, and surgical/post-surgical monitoring. The position will oversee undergraduate students in their research involving animal work and provide various support services including technical, irradiation, and rodent surgical suite/anesthesia cart support. Processing incoming animals and assisting with routine health maintenance are also key duties. The role requires conducting preclinical experiments in animal models of neural disease, specifically brain tumors and tumor metastases, overseeing their execution, maintaining accurate laboratory records, and preparing research findings. Assisting with designing sampling plans, coordinating sample collection, and modifying existing protocols to improve techniques or incorporate new diagnostic procedures are also part of the job. Searching scientific literature to select and modify methods and procedures is expected. Additionally, the position involves collecting biological and tissue specimens from laboratory animals, including blood samples and tissues from necropsy animals, and completing necessary laboratory records and requisitions.
