Musick Peeler is seeking an experienced Billing Specialist/E-Billing Appeals in our Los Angeles office. This is a full-time, on-site, hourly, non-exempt position with a work schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Qualifications The candidate must have a minimum of 3+ years of legal billing experience, strong Excel/MS Office skills, with a deep understanding of legal billing rules (e.g., e-billing & client guidelines), excellent attention to detail, and superb communication/organizational skills. Direct Aderant or similar software experience required (such as Elite 3E). Experience with E-billing and appeals tracking and submission is required. This candidate will report to and work closely with the Director of Finance. We adhere to a team approach, working closely with billing and collections team members to reach monthly targets. Software Experience Must be proficient in Aderant/ Sierra - or experience with Elite Enterprise, Elite Prolaw, or other equivalent legal billing software Core Experience Time entry and billing for hourly, flat-fee, and contingency matters Understanding billable vs. non-billable time Preparing prebills and final invoices Handling billing adjustments and write-offs Proficient with client-specific e-billing guidelines (LEDES, UTBMS codes) Catching time entry errors, attention to detail Ensuring rate accuracy Reviewing narratives for compliance Reconciling billing discrepancies Familiar with basic accounts receivable (AR) processes Applying client payments Familiar with trust accounting basics (IOLTA awareness is a plus) Month-end billing cycles Working with general ledger summaries E-billing platforms and site administration (e.g., CounselLink, Legal Tracker, Serengeti, etc.), including maintaining timekeeper status, rates, budgets, user profiles, submitting and tracking of appeals Enter timekeeper rate and new matter setups for assigned billing and e-bill clients Review outside counsel guidelines and update billing system to ensure compliance Following strict client billing rules and guidelines Communication Working directly with billing team, attorneys and legal assistants Explaining billing issues clearly (often to non-billing staff) Handling confidential client and financial data discreetly General Items Finance or Accounting degree preferred, or equivalent relevant experience Multi-office or large-firm billing environments High-volume billing (hundreds of bills per cycle) Collections support or client follow-up Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP) Benefits/Compensation Musick Peeler offers a collaborative and professional work environment with a competitive salary and excellent benefits.
