About The Position

The University of Colorado, College of Nursing, is seeking a Bilingual Medical Assistant (Health Care Tech I) or Licensed Practical Nurse (Health Care Tech III) for a (1.0 FTE) benefits-eligible position at Sheridan Health Services (SHS), a Federally Qualified Health Center located in southwest Denver, CO. Health Care Techs support specific service lines within the clinic (pediatrics, primary care, obstetrics, and behavioral health) but will be cross-trained to work across those areas as well. This role involves working with an outstanding pediatric team, serving ages 0 to 22 years, and flexing between both pediatric clinics when clinic needs warrant. The position requires demonstrating sensitivity to the challenges of patients with reduced access to economic and health resources, and enthusiasm to support these patients both in the clinics and remotely by phone or Tele-Health (Zoom). The role requires speaking Spanish and English on a daily basis, communicating clinical terminology to patients and colleagues.

Requirements

Completion of an accredited medical assistant program (for MA I).
Completion of an accredited medical assistant program (for MA II).
One (1) year of experience working as a medical assistant (for MA II).
One year of medical assistant experience may substitute for completion of an accredited program and is in addition to any required years of experience.
Completion of an accredited program, Colorado state licensure, and years of experience in Nursing Aide / Licensed Practical Nurse / Emergency Medical Technician fields may substitute for medical assistant specific requirements.
Colorado State Certified Nurse Aide licensure may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program (for Registered Nursing Student).
Completion of Medical/Surgical Nursing I course with a passing grade may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by date of hire.
Must be willing and able to speak Spanish and English on a daily basis to communicate clinical terminology.
Must be willing and able to remain credentialed and ensure credentialing materials stay current.
Must be willing and able to work until 8 p.m. on designated extended-hours shifts as needed.
Availability to work weekends on an infrequent, rotating, as-needed basis.
Must be willing and able to work in a normal patient care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.

Responsibilities

Greet patients and families courteously and complete standard patient check-in procedures in person and remotely using Tele-Health and other technology.
Utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to measure and document vital signs and notify providers of out-of-range values.
Review and complete medication reconciliation.
Accurately document the patient’s chief complaint and health history.
Prepare and coach patients for provider examinations and assist providers with examinations and procedures, as needed.
Perform standard patient screening tests using apps and advanced technological tools for a secure HIPAA-compliant communication workflow in the clinic (high-speed laptops, iPads, MS Teams /Jabber).
Perform phlebotomy and follow safe lab procedures for the proper collection and handling of other lab specimens.
Perform basic wound care and first aid.
Provide patient education with regard to office policies, lab results, medications, diagnoses, treatment, plan of care, and follow-up phone calls.
Prepare, administer, and electronically document medications within scope (i.e., Depo-Provera) with provider authorization.
Administer immunizations, maintain immunization records, and complete annual immunization training within the timeline set by the supervisor.
Perform clerical and administrative duties regularly and as needed, including covering front desk staff and answering overflow incoming calls during absences and busy times.
Courteously answer phone calls and schedule appointments, fax and upload orders, internal and external records/report, and prepare school documents for providers' signatures.
Work with MA team to maintain supply inventory through tracking and stocking, including maintenance of sterilized instruments. Also place orders for replacements through the Compliance Officer.
Fax prescriptions to the pharmacy as requested by providers and participate in insurance Prior Authorizations (PARs), as needed.
Engage with community partners as needed, including public health agencies, specialty/outside provider offices, local hospitals, and free-standing healthcare facilities.
Attend regular team huddles, team meetings, and staff meetings as part of performance expectations.
Utilize robust CU learning and development opportunities to further knowledge and grow in position.
Performs additional miscellaneous job duties as assigned, including clinic grant initiatives.
Upholds strict compliance with University and professional policies/procedures.
Follows CDC guidelines for reporting illness and temperature, wearing masks and washing hands, and more during flu seasons and pandemics.
At the Medical Assistant I level, positions function at the fully operational level and operate independently in performing the full range of technical health tasks and problem-solving. Positions follow established work procedures and operate within standard guidelines and alternatives. At the Medical Assistant I level, the focus is on performing and strengthening the full range of medical assistant functions outlined above, with the intent to promote after approximately 1 year of experience and completion of specific training and performance evaluations/coaching.
At the Medical Assistant II level, duties are similar to those performed at level I, but the complexity of the job is different. Systems, operations, and processes are still established and defined but allow more flexibility and latitude in adapting practical approaches or routines to various situations. Established guidelines do not cover all circumstances, so positions must improvise solutions and alternatives. This level includes responsibility for training lower-level technicians.
