About The Position

The Bilingual Communication Specialist Program Assistant facilitates oral and written communication between English- and Spanish-speaking students, families, schools, and agencies. The role serves VBISD Early Childhood Programs & Services and VBISD Special Education Programs and reports to the Supervisor of Early Childhood Special Education Services. The position is full-time and in-person. Employment terms are governed by the master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.

Requirements

Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to sit and work on a computer for extended periods.
Ability to stand, bend, and move up and down from the floor throughout the day.
Ability to travel across the county.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree.
Translator certification.
Prior experience in a school setting, special education, and working with bilingual children and families.

Responsibilities

Interpret and assist communication between school staff and students in the classroom.
Facilitate positive communication between the school and families.
Translate VBISD documents, including official parent notices and home-school communication.
Interpret home-school information in person, by phone, and during meetings.
Provide interpretation and translation for special education meetings, including IEP meetings.
Connect bilingual families with schools and service agencies.
Maintain confidentiality across all settings.
Make student-centered decisions and follow federal, state, and VBISD policies and procedures.
Model VBISD guidelines of Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Excellence.
Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed-upon timelines and pursue ongoing improvement.
Perform additional tasks and duties as assigned by the Director or Superintendent.
