This is a highly visible, hands-on role supporting employees across the full employment lifecycle—from onboarding through retirement. The Benefits Consultant Generalist steps into a high-impact, high-variety environment, providing critical coverage across leave administration, retirement counseling, and onboarding/offboarding support. If you’re someone who enjoys owning complex cases, navigating nuanced policies, and being a trusted resource for employees during pivotal life moments, this role offers both breadth and depth. You’ll play a key role in ensuring timely, compliant, and people-centered benefits support in a fast-paced university environment serving more than 4,000 employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2+ years of HR benefits experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong working knowledge of benefits administration, including leave, retirement, and employee lifecycle support
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working across HR systems
  • Ability to manage high-volume, time-sensitive work with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Guide employees through leave options, eligibility, and benefits with clarity and empathy
  • Review applications and medical documentation to determine eligibility and ensure compliance
  • Manage casework, including documentation, system entries, and communications
  • Partner with Employee Relations on complex or sensitive situations
  • Monitor case data, reporting, and timekeeping accuracy
  • Advise employees on retirement options including TSERS, ORP, phased retirement, and incentive programs
  • Provide guidance on retiree benefits such as healthcare, Medicare, and supplemental retirement plans (403(b), 457(b), NC 401(k))
  • Process retirement documentation and ensure timely, accurate completion
  • Support complex calculations, reporting, and educational presentations
  • Deliver benefits orientations and consultations for new, transferring, and departing employees
  • Support benefits enrollment and ensure compliance with required retirement elections
  • Guide employees through separation-related benefits including COBRA and portability options
  • Monitor and process separation actions, deductions, and exception requests
  • Support reduction in force (RIF) actions and retirement-related transitions
  • Respond to high-volume HR inquiries through service channels
  • Interpret policies and collaborate with internal stakeholders
  • Support process improvements and maintain documentation
  • Assist with life events processing, open enrollment, and special projects
