About The Position

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is currently seeking candidates for the position of Substance Abuse Counselor on the Forensic Mental Health Treatment Mall at Georgia Regional Hospital - Atlanta, located in Decatur, GA. This role involves providing individual and group counseling to adults with concurrent severe persistent mental illness and substance use disorders who are residing in community integration homes under court supervision. The position is part of a large enterprise aimed at improving the lives of Georgia's citizens and offers a robust benefits package.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher qualification, in clinical/counseling psychology, or closely related field.
  • Experience working with severe and persistent mental health issues and/or developmental ability.
  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor – CADC I or II or Certified Addition Counselor - CAC
  • Bachelor's degree in counseling or a related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of job-related experience; or one (1) year of experience at the lower level Behavioral Hlth Counselor 1 (HCP100) or position equivalent.
  • National and State background check as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel clients in individual and group sessions to help them build coping strategies, recover from illness, and safely transition from a psychiatric hospital to the community.
  • Conduct substance use assessments utilizing clinical interviews and evidence-based assessment measures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to client's treatment.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and record client progress according to measurable goals described in treatment and care plan.
  • Prepare and maintain all required treatment records and reports.
