About The Position

The Behavioral Health Assessment Officer (BHAO) is responsible for evaluating patients in the emergency department and on acute inpatient units who present with behavioral health needs. This role involves conducting psychiatric evaluations, triage, and brief crisis interventions, including suicide risk assessments and safety planning. The BHAO also coordinates with hospital and community providers to ensure effective patient care and follow-up for mental health, substance use, and primary care needs. Additionally, the BHAO will administer rating scales and collect patient-reported outcomes measures when clinically appropriate. Consultation with a psychiatrist regarding patient assessment and treatment planning is a key responsibility, with the BHAO then relaying this information to the medical care teams.

Requirements

  • MSW from an accredited social work graduate program.
  • Licensed by the State of New York (LMSW/LCSW/LCSW-R).
  • Competency in providing cognitive and behavioral interventions within an emergency department or inpatient setting.
  • Internship/work experience in the mental health setting providing suicide risk assessments and safety planning.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience working in an emergency room setting providing mental health evaluations.

Nice To Haves

  • LMSW in NYS or obtained within 18 months of hire or transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Primary evaluator of patients referred for psychiatric assessment in the emergency department.
  • Evaluate patients on acute inpatient units identified as experiencing mental health symptoms impairing functional status.
  • Provide psychiatric evaluations, triage, and brief crisis interventions.
  • Conduct suicide risk assessments and safety planning.
  • Ensure safe disposition related to behavioral health needs.
  • Coordinate with hospital and community providers for adequate communication and facilitation of patient care.
  • Facilitate appropriate mental health, substance use, and primary care follow-up.
  • Administer rating scales and collect patient-reported outcomes measures.
  • Consult with the assigned psychiatrist regarding patient assessment and treatment plan development.
  • Relay assessment and treatment plan information to medical care teams.
