The Behavioral Health Assessment Officer (BHAO) is responsible for evaluating patients in the emergency department and on acute inpatient units who present with behavioral health needs. This role involves conducting psychiatric evaluations, triage, and brief crisis interventions, including suicide risk assessments and safety planning. The BHAO also coordinates with hospital and community providers to ensure effective patient care and follow-up for mental health, substance use, and primary care needs. Additionally, the BHAO will administer rating scales and collect patient-reported outcomes measures when clinically appropriate. Consultation with a psychiatrist regarding patient assessment and treatment planning is a key responsibility, with the BHAO then relaying this information to the medical care teams.
