About The Position

The Behavioral Health Assessment Officer (BHAO) is a social worker responsible for evaluating patients referred for psychiatric assessment in the emergency department and on acute inpatient units. The role involves assessing patients experiencing behavioral health needs that impair their functional status. The BHAO provides psychiatric evaluations, triage, and brief crisis interventions, including suicide risk assessments, safety planning, and safe disposition. This role also requires coordination with hospital and community providers to ensure effective patient care, including follow-up for mental health, substance use, and primary care. Administering rating scales and collecting patient-reported outcomes is also expected. The BHAO will consult with a psychiatrist via phone for patient assessments and treatment plan development, and then communicate this information to the medical care teams.

Requirements

  • LMSW in NYS or obtained within 18 months of hire or transfer.
  • MSW from an accredited social work graduate program.
  • Licensed by the State of New York (LMSW/LCSW/ LCSW-R).
  • Demonstrate competency in providing cognitive and behavioral interventions within an emergency department or inpatient setting.
  • Internship/work experience in the mental health setting providing suicide risk assessments as well as safety planning.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience working in an emergency room setting providing mental health evaluations.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with a psychiatrist regarding patient assessment and treatment plan development.
  • Relay assessment and treatment plan information to medical care teams.
