The Behavioral Health Assessment Officer (BHAO) is a social worker responsible for evaluating patients referred for psychiatric assessment in the emergency department and on acute inpatient units. The role involves assessing patients experiencing behavioral health needs that impair their functional status. The BHAO provides psychiatric evaluations, triage, and brief crisis interventions, including suicide risk assessments, safety planning, and safe disposition. This role also requires coordination with hospital and community providers to ensure effective patient care, including follow-up for mental health, substance use, and primary care. Administering rating scales and collecting patient-reported outcomes is also expected. The BHAO will consult with a psychiatrist via phone for patient assessments and treatment plan development, and then communicate this information to the medical care teams.
