About The Position

Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager, the Behavioral Health Clinician is responsible for providing culturally appropriate professional behavioral health treatment services for the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Health and Human Services Department. This position works with a diverse population of all ages. As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, the Behavioral Health Clinician will fulfill the mission of continuous quality improvement of mental health and substance abuse treatment services and will assist in achieving the strategic priorities of NHBP within the scope and responsibilities of this position. This position may be considered eligible to be performed within a hybrid work structure based on the productivity of the team member and ability to meet the needs of the organization as determined by supervisor and the department head.

Requirements

Master’s degree in social work, or closely related field such as Professional Counseling or Psychology.
Must be licensed in field of practice and be in good standing in the State of Michigan.
Three years of experience working in the field.
Experience working with Tribal government or Native American institutions.
Must maintain a valid driver's license with good driving record; GSA certifiable and able to travel.
Must be able to successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening in accordance with NHBP standards.
Must be or able to become CPR/First Aid certified as training is available
Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality and have knowledge of HIPAA and CFR-42 requirements.
Must possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written including public speaking in both large and small groups.
Must be able to adjust schedule as needed or required.
Must be able to demonstrate strong self-management and communication skills to stay engaged with team members, team initiatives and deadlines when working in a hybrid environment.
Must always present in a professional demeanor and appearance.

Nice To Haves

Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) Certification, or willing to obtain.
Knowledge of Indian Health Service regulations.
Well-developed knowledge of the historical trauma of indigenous tribal communities and trauma informed care in a general health setting.
Ability to provide Solution Focused Brief Therapy and other short-term treatment approaches of an Integrated Behavioral Health Model.

Responsibilities

Interviews clients, family members and other interested parties to assess needs for mental health and substance abuse treatment; completes thorough and timely mental health screenings and psycho-social assessments including DSM-5 diagnostic impressions.
Provides culturally appropriate treatment services for children, adolescents, adults and elders including individual, couples and family treatment, group treatment and psycho-social educational groups, and crisis intervention and follow-up.
Develops person centered treatment plans with a person-centered approach; evaluates and monitors client progress toward treatment goals and communicates clearly with clients in regard to their progress. Updates treatment plans regularly and according to policy and procedures.
Provides a clinical assessment regarding the end of services; provides discharge summaries, follow-up care, referrals, and aftercare planning as required.
Coordinates and assists with mental health inpatient treatment including discharge planning and aftercare.
Performs case management duties as they relate to but not limited to social services, child welfare, and medical as assigned or as required to meet the needs of clients, including but not limited to phone calls, referrals, follow-up, scheduling, warm handovers, contacts with client’s family, and collaboration with internal and external service providers.
In the absence of, or to assist the BH case manager with duties related to substance use disorder care coordination including treatment coordination, discharge planning, aftercare, case management, and maintaining professional relationship with treatment facilities.
In the absence of, or to assist the BH Consultant with duties as they relate to but not limited to the BH needs of Medical/Dental patients. This can include stepping into medical/dental visits to offer additional and BH specific support and guidance, consulting with medical and/or dental providers in regard to clients presenting with BH related needs, assisting with BH referrals, making referrals/connections outside of NHBP services, offering brief and solution focused BH intervention including crisis and substance use disorder interventions, providing screenings and brief interventions for a plethora of BH related concerns, etc.
Documents and maintains case files in accordance with policy and procedures.
Prepares narrative and statistical reports, documents correspondence regarding client status, and may provide court reports or testimony.
Complies with legal requirements regarding mandatory reporting.
Collaborates and maintains positive working relationships with other internal and external professions and professionals.
Assists and participates in Tribal outreach, education, events or activities.
Participates in department meetings as directed and/or appropriate, including task forces, work groups, team meetings, case consultation, clinical supervision and other relevant meetings.
Participates in a wide range of ongoing learning and self-assessment in regard to the multitude of client needs including mental health and substance use, domestic violence, child abuse/neglect, foster care, infant mental health, trauma, medically fragile, etc., in order to perform a multitude of treatment modalities within one’s scope of practice.
Coordinate leave and continuing education requests with the Behavioral Health Manager and the other members of the Behavioral Health team well in advance.
Maintain appropriate and healthy working relationships with team members, clients, and community members.
Represent the NHBP clinics and team members in a positive manner, within the community.
