Behavioral Aide (Afterschool Downey)
About The Position
This is a part-time position working Monday through Friday from 1:30 pm to 6:15 pm at various locations within the Downey Unified School District. The primary responsibility is direct support to students with special needs, participating in activities planned by after-school program staff, and assisting with instructional activities and materials. The role involves maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment, fostering a good learning atmosphere, and potentially assisting with student needs assessment and providing general observations to staff. The aide will work with students individually, in small groups, or in learning centers, and may assist with classroom technology, adaptive devices, social skills, and personal care like toileting and hygiene. The position may involve community outings, assisting with feeding, supervising playgrounds, and reinforcing lessons. Cooperation with students, staff, and administration is essential, as is assisting with crisis intervention and discipline. Other job-related duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- Proof of High School Diploma or equivalency; or proof of an A.A. degree, 48 college units; or pass the Paraeducator Exam
- Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of children
- Ability to operate classroom technology equipment
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children and adults
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality
- Ability to show competence and assist with academic skills, e.g. reading and math
- Ability to communicate orally with correct language usage
- Knowledge of the general needs and behavior patterns of children
- Knowledge of safe work practices
- Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
- Knowledge of needs and concerns of children with a variety of special needs
- Ability to perform general clerical duties at the request of supervisor
- Ability to read and understand instructions, follow and give clear directions
- Ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of established guidelines
- Ability to adapt to individual needs of after-school program staff and students and work with interruptions
- Ability to identify and respond quickly to emergency situations in a calm and resourceful manner

- Complete a mandatory Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) Training (Provided)
- Complete mandatory training as designated by BEAM
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or submit to weekly COVID-19 testing
- Ability to commute/relocate to Downey, CA: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
- Behavioral Therapist/Interventionist: 1 year (Required)
Nice To Haves
- Recent experience in working with groups such as youth groups, child centers, or playgrounds and/or experience requiring organizational skills is desirable.
Responsibilities
- Direct support to students with special needs

- Reinforce lessons/activities with small groups of learners
- Assist after-school program staff in crisis intervention and discipline
- Participate in program planning meetings
