About The Position

Under general supervision, the Behavior Technician provides support to Teachers by assisting students struggling with behavior management in the classroom. This role involves monitoring and assisting students with classroom lessons and activities, supervising the use of materials, and supporting teachers in implementing instructional programs and behavior management strategies. The technician is responsible for ensuring student and staff safety through consistent discipline, creating a calm atmosphere, documenting behaviors, and participating in professional development. Communication with teachers and parents regarding student progress is also a key aspect of the role. Additionally, the technician monitors students in the cafeteria and during recess.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of record maintenance and retention policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general classroom policies, procedures, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of behavior classroom management techniques.
  • Knowledge of child development.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic interventions and de-escalation strategies.
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning styles and techniques.
  • Skill in maintaining composure when working with students with behavior problems.
  • Skill in strong de-escalation and decision-making strategies.
  • Skill in leading small groups with students to assist with academics.
  • Skill in organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Skill in identifying and understanding the behavioral challenges of students.
  • Skill in creating a calm and understanding environment for students.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Skill in interacting tactfully with District staff and outside agencies.
  • Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Skill in operating a computer and related software.
  • Associate degree in a related field AND two (2) years of experience working with special needs students; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A valid State driver’s license may be required.
  • Must possess an IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and assists students with completing classroom lessons and activities; supervises the use of classroom materials.
  • Supports Teachers with implementing instructional programs; provides behavior management support as necessary for Teachers to maintain the focus of students.
  • Supports the safety of students and staff by using conscious and consistent discipline strategies and techniques; provides a safe and calm atmosphere for students struggling with behavior management.
  • Documents student behaviors and development.
  • Participate in regular professional development regarding specialized skills for students with Emotional Disturbance.
  • Communicates with Teachers and parents regarding student development, needs, behaviors, and progress.
  • Monitors students in the cafeteria and at recess.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
