The special educational behavior instructional assistant assists a teacher, behavior analyst, or behavior specialist in improving students’ behavior and adaptive functioning, supporting the quality of educational opportunities, supervising students, and performing instructional tasks that may be carried out by a non-credentialed employee. The teacher or behavior specialist retains responsibility for instruction and supervision, although the assistant’s work need not always take place in their presence. The position serves specialized, highly supported classrooms and programs for students undergoing multi-tiered assessment or requiring intensive behavioral and emotional support. Assistants work in autism and ED programs with children ages 0–22, individually or in small groups. Students may have autism, behavioral or learning difficulties, processing challenges, conduct problems, physical or language impairments, and maladaptive behaviors such as repetitive, disruptive, aggressive, depressive, or self-injurious behaviors. The assistant may need to provide constant supervision and manage the whole class during crises. The position works 5.75 hours per day, five days per week, for 9.5 work months. Positions are less than eight hours and are authorized in connection with established special education classes labeled SED or SH, including for students with autism who are fully included in regular education classes.
