About The Position

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking a talented Behavior Specialist I to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide interventions and support individuals with adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in a residential environment. The selected candidate will qualify for a $3,000 hiring bonus.

Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience working with adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Person-Centered Individual Support Plans (ISP).
  • Familiarity with Therapeutic Options Techniques for managing behavioral and crisis situations.
  • Ability to complete required documentation accurately and within deadlines.
  • Understanding of confidentiality, Human Rights, and HCBS Rights.
  • Proficiency in medication administration and verification.
  • Experience with financial ledger monitoring and inventory management.
  • Ability to conduct household and grocery shopping.
  • Procurement cardholder responsibilities.

  • Experience as a Direct Support Professional II.

Responsibilities

  • Implement Person-Centered Individual Support Plans (ISP) for up to twelve (12) assigned participants.
  • Assist with meal preparation, hygiene care, and activities of daily living.
  • Complete all required documentation to show progress or regression towards the participant’s plan goals within the quality and deadlines outlined in regulation and policy.
  • Review and provide feedback on documentation and hourly billing of Direct Support Professional IIs for accuracy, adequate details, and compliance while immediately reporting any deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Sign and verify quarterly reviews in the electronic health record by the quarterly due date and provide accurate details related to each activity and essential support based on how the person was supported and how they responded to the support.
  • Maintain the health, safety, and well-being of all participants in the program based on each ISP.
  • Manage behavioral and crisis situations utilizing Therapeutic Options Techniques.
  • Assist with scheduling and escorting on medical appointments.
  • Ensuring all necessary documentation from medical appointments and events is properly obtained and routed.
  • Actively provide input into ongoing needs and resource identification processes.
  • Identify, schedule, and support participants to participate in various community integration opportunities.
  • Ensure all participant’s rights are intact and always enforced.
  • Uphold all confidentiality, Human Rights, and Home and Community-Based Service (HCBS) Rights at all times.
  • Monitor the use and compliance of all financial ledgers being maintained at their assigned site or facility.
  • Prepare or review the medication administration record before implementation to ensure all entries match the physician’s orders and that all necessary medications are on-site, available, and appropriately labeled.
  • Administer medications as prescribed utilizing the five (5) Rights of administration.
  • Check or verify medications delivered for accuracy and report inaccuracies immediately to the pharmacy and /or the Case Coordinator.
  • Complete a monthly inventory of supplies within their assigned site or facility, as appropriate, to determine purchasing needs.
  • Conduct household and grocery shopping for their assigned site or facility.
  • Serve as a procurement cardholder, upholding all procurement policies and procedures for conducting household and grocery shopping for assigned locations.
