Requirements
- Compassion, professionalism, emotional resilience, and strong observational skills
- Experience working in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, zoological settings, or animal handling environments
- Knowledge of animal behavior, positive reinforcement, and temperament assessment
- Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in emotionally challenging situations
- Euthanasia by Injection (EBI) certification or ability to obtain within one year
- Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and shelter software systems
Responsibilities
- Conducting animal intake and follow-up health exams, including vaccines, microchips, weight checks, and behavior observations
- Performing formal and informal behavior evaluations for dogs and cats
- Monitoring animal health and behavior changes and communicating concerns to veterinary and behavior teams
- Providing enrichment and behavior support strategies to improve animal well-being
- Assisting with safe animal movement and handling throughout the shelter
- Consulting with adopters to support successful transitions into the home
- Training staff and volunteers on safe animal handling techniques
- Assisting with dangerous or fractious animal handling requests
- Serving as the Euthanasia Lead and performing humane euthanasia in accordance with HSPPR and HSUS best practices
- Participating in emergency animal transport as needed
- Maintaining accurate documentation using objective, behavior-based language
